Here at Origami Owl We have a culture that may be different from other companies. I'll try to do two of these short ones tomorrow. This is really just a PSA, rather than anything. If being pessimistic or optimistic changes your behavior, you're being delusional.įairly short post, but I had a test today and one next week Friday. Thinking that you're going to fail the test, so you see no point in even trying to study for the test.Īs long as you're ideas are founded on evidence, you're being realistic. notably the resulting prolongation of the lives of the weak, both in mind and body, and the heavy burthens imposed on the capable members of society. Pessimism as a principle has manifested itself in religious forms, notably in Buddhism. You think you know all your work, enough so that you won't study for the test. Pessimism and optimism in this popular use are terms of merely relative import. For the activist and writer Mary Heglar, both optimism and pessimism smack of the privilege wrought from the deluded belief that this world has ever been. Doesn't mean you won't study, just that you realize you'll do badly. Thus, optimists should tend to be confident and persistent in the face of diverse life challenges (even when progress is difficult or slow). Realizing that you aren't going to do well on this test, as you don't know half of the topics for the test. Optimism and pessimism are broad, generalized versions of confidence and doubt they are confidence and doubt pertaining to life, rather than to just a specific context (Scheier & Carver, 1992). Doesn't mean you won't study, just means that you feel that you'll do well on this test. Let me give some examples.Ĭomplete understanding of a topic, makes you optimistic about the test. Internal consistency (Cronbachs alpha) of the optimism items was 0.761 in 26-year-olds and 0.739 in 46-year-olds, and for the pessimism items 0.816 in 26-year- olds and 0.812 in 46-year-olds. But when you start to have your behavior affected by the two, then you're treading onto the verge of delusion. studies, optimism and pessimism are here considered as separate vari-ables (Glaesmer, 2012 Hecht, 2013). Now, I'm not saying that optimism can't be delusional and pessimism can't be realist. Especially when their "realism" or their "delusion" changes their behavior. Optimists also seem to respond better to positive feedback, and part of being optimistic may be generating this feedback for themselves, i.e. Both pessimism and optimism are palliative illusions, implying an unfounded certainty about how the. But delusion is not necessarily a bad thing in fact, it can be incredibly useful, as Ill elaborate below. A lot of people (see teenagers) seem to confuse pessimism for realism and optimism for delusion. I suspect that Adam Cohen confuses optimism with hope. It’s risky for a brand like us to release something that will be trendy before any high fashion brand releases it. “We don’t have the same market power Vetements, Gosha or Off-White has. "In the ready-to-wear industry and fast-fashion, everything has been invented, you cannot create something really revolutionary," says Erwan Ferriere, the brand's communications manager. “With blogs and influencers, that product elevation allows to be pushed hard to the masses, which in turn makes it a trend.” Parisian brand Nid de Guepes, too, points to a vague idea of “youth culture” as their inspiration, but they also have a pragmatic-veering-toward-cynical approach to the industry. “We’re always keeping an eye on what’s going on in other industries as well-music, visual art, design-to make sure we’re developing upon other relevant areas to incorporate into our line,” says George. Like their customers, Represent pays close attention to social media. Rather than revolutionize by inventing the next big trend, they've gotten ahead by hopping on current trends quicker than anyone else. “It sucks up everything in its path, feeding off other designers, destroying the environment we live in with absolutely no remorse for the devastation it leaves behind.” But labels like Sung’s are still taking a page out of the Zara playbook. “When I think of fast-fashion, I think of a massive tornado,” he says. Richard Sung, the co-founder of Las Vegas lifestyle brand KNYEW, knows what makes customers apprehensive about traditional fast-fashion retailers. But to the designers giving the inspiration, like Fear of God’s Jerry Lorenzo, some of these new-age fast-fashion brands are more like imitators than actual designers. And like their more corporate competition, brands like Represent, KNYEW, and MNML have gotten popular by flipping the hottest current trends into instantly-available items, while using social media and YouTube to reach new customers. These brands might not categorize themselves as fast-fashion, but despite their relatively modest sizes, they understand the importance of instant gratification to their style-savvy, cost-cognizant audience. They attribute these strains to divergent spending habits and the rise of competition, but it's also coming from the ground up-via young, independent, hungry labels that have used social media to attract young, trend-hungry customers. In the first quarter of this year, H&M had their first monthly sales drop in nearly four years, and Zara parent company Inditex SA saw profitability shrink to an eight-year low. Interest in fast-fashion is, for the first time, waning. As menswear became more like womenswear-more driven by “it” items from season to season-guys started looking for new ways to keep up with the revolving door of trends. Fast-fashion retailers like Zara and H&M were there to give them the trends they craved at a fraction of the cost (and often testing the boundary between "inspired by" and outright ripped off in the process). But swapping heritage gear for high-fashion looks put pressure on their wallets. It wasn't long before they were trading in Yuketen for Yeezy, Ralph Lauren for Raf Simons, and A.P.C. After the #menswear boom of the mid-to-late aughts, guys began looking in the mirror at their chambray shirts, raw selvedge denim and moc toe boots and wondering what was next for their sartorial lives. The idea is that the results, taken as a whole, will help to identify what is making your Mac run slowly or have kernel panics. It is unlikely that any one entry really has any meaning. It is more of a general overview of the state of your Mac. In the middle of the tour, you hit the tasting room. On the weekend, they don't run the bottling machines, so we missed that operation. The tour guides are educated and make the tour fun. They take you through the brewery with stops and explanations along the way. Once on the tour, you go into a room where they get you organized, issue safety glasses and give you a sampler glass of beer which you take with you. We elbowed our way to the bar and ordered an IPA flight while we waited on the tour. But, with our purchased tour tickets, we were allowed to go on in. When we returned for our 4:45 PM tour, there was a line to get into the building. Note - beer is not FREE in the beer hall. Even at 11, there was already a line for brewery tour tickets ($5) and people were already ordering beer and hanging in the beer hall. We got to the brewery around 11AM on a Saturday (as suggested on the website) to buy tour tickets for later in the day. What you have is one really long bar with every Harpoon beer available, long tables and people. Full glass for outside views and glass views of part of the brewery. You walk to the building and go upstairs and emerge in their large, European style beer hall that is very open and airy. The location is on the water in a commercial/industrial area. It's a short walk to/from several of the stops to the brewery. We took the Silver line on the T to get there. This place is wildly popular on the weekends, you are not going to be able to just walk in and expect to tour. I highly recommend reading the web site and heed their advise regarding a visit and brewery tour. If you don't like real beer, don't bother (although the pretzels are REALLY good) I like harpoon beers, so for me the tour is a 'must visit' for Boston. After that, it was back to the bar, and shop for merchandise. Next stop the bottling plant, and more technical details of the lengths they go to keep the beer at its best. The group coming behind us drove us out, but it didn't feel as though we were being rushed (not sure how long we are on their, but it could easily have been 20mins). If we didn't get to try everything, it was our own fault. Our guide gave us a brief and entertaining description of each of the beers (for us, if memory serves, it was Rye IPA, IPA, Harpoon Ale, Summer Ale, White IPA, Black IPA, UFO White, UFO Raspberry, Stout, Directors Cut, and Harpoon Cider) and then it was up to us to decide what we wanted to try. The tasting room is a relatively small bar with taps for whatever is available on the day. The good news is that the beer is still excellent, as the next stop on the tour demonstrated. What you see is a lot of stainless steel and a small control room where the computer that controls it all lives. Harpoon is no longer a small craft brewery, but has grown to small industrial scale. If you've been to a brewery before, there is nothing new here. Although there were probably 30 of us in the group, his commentary was clear, aided with a mike. The tour itself started with a sample of IPA, and then our tour guide took us into the brewery. It was freshly baked, the dipping sauces freshly prepared, and delicious. If you visit, you might not think to try the pretzels, but think again. The beer was excellent, but that was to be expected. We filled the time with a beer each, and a pretzel to share. We arrived at about 3:30 on a Monday, for the 4pm tasting to discover that this was the first day of their new regime of running tours during the week, so we put our name down.
